Ante Perkov Way [is named after] the late Ante Perkov, who ran one of San Pedro's most popular restaurants and donated much of his time and money to charity. The block-long "Ante Way" [runs] along what [was once] Palos Verdes Street between Sixth and Seventh streets -- in front of Ante's, the restaurant he established and ran for five decades, in San Pedro.
"It [is a] great tribute to him," said Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who introduced the motion to the City Council [in May, 2002].
"We all think it's wonderful," said Tony Perkov, one of Perkov's three sons who runs the restaurant established by his father in 1951. "He just loved San Pedro."
In addition to running one of the town's busiest restaurants and social gathering spots, Perkov threw himself into humanitarian work, often providing free catering for fund-raising dinners. Hahn said renaming the street in front of Ante's Restaurant [serves] as an enduring tribute to the immigrant who became something of a modern-day legend in San Pedro. Perkov became a U.S. citizen in 1954 and frequently spoke of his love for his adopted land. A large American flag flies atop Ante's Restaurant, 729 S. Palos Verdes St. Perkov's first restaurant -- an 11-stool establishment he called Tony's Cafe -- opened in 1946 at Sixth and Beacon streets. Ante's Restaurant opened in 1951 on Fifth Street and moved to its present location in 1975.
"He was somebody who came over with nothing and did well," said his son, Tony Perkov. "His spirit is still alive in the community. I was so lucky to have him as a father."
